Store Robbery Suspect Flees Cops, Crashes Into Area Home, Police Say

A 39-year-old man is behind bars accused in a string of commercial burglaries in the region.

Scott Vanbergen, of Saratoga County, was arrested Friday, Nov. 17, in connection with an attempted robbery at a Stewart’s Shops in Schenectady, located on McClellan Street.

Officers were called after an employee pushed a panic alarm, according to Schenectady Police. The worker told officers that a man had attempted to steal the cash register but was unsuccessful.

With a description of Vanbergen’s vehicle, police eventually located him in Schenectady.

He reportedly fled when officers attempted to stop him, eventually crashing into a vacant home on Summit Avenue.

Vanbergen suffered minor injuries and was arrested at the scene.

Police said he is also considered a person of interest in several other burglaries and thefts in Schenectady, Glenville, Rotterdam, and neighboring areas.

He is charged with:

  • Attempted robbery
  • Unlawful fleeing
  • Resisting arrest
  • Driving while ability impaired
  • Numerous vehicle and traffic law violations
